Q & A with the Artist

We are proud to showcase a variety of different kinds of performing arts at the fringe.

What is your show? What kind of performance is it? What is it about?

"Go to Sleep!" is a new comedy musical by Penelope Flowers. It follows the story of Piper, a young insomniac desperate for a good night's sleep, who is visited by three mysterious "ghouls" who promise to grant her rest with a magical lullaby if she can manage to beat their three unusual games.

Fringe festivals are a place for art at all levels of creation. Where are you at in your process?

Is this a first draft? A previously produced piece? An experimental show? Or something else?

"Go to Sleep!" is a musical I started writing sometime in 2020 when, during a particularly intense episode of insomnia, I came up with a simple melody and a story concept. I slowly added new ideas over the past five years, and this fringe fest production will be the first time this story is presented to an audience in any form.

Why did you submit your show to Omaha Fringe?

Writing a musical is hard to commit to. I had been sitting on this concept and slowly fleshing it out over the last five years, but ultimately I needed a deadline to push me towards the finish line. Submitting to Omaha Fringe Fest seemed like the perfect opportunity to get performance dates and a venue that would force me to sit down and get to work in earnest lol.

What are you hoping audiences will experience when they see your performance?

What can audiences expect to take away?

I'm really excited for people to hear these songs I've been writing. I think they manage to convey a lot of difficult feelings very beautifully. I'm hoping audiences will be able to laugh at the absurdity, but also resonate with Piper's plight as she desperately tries to make herself understood.
