Looking Glass

Produced by: Che Flory Productions

Rating: PG-13

Synopsis:

Looking Glass is a radical cut of Robert Greene and Thomas Lodge’s A Looking Glass for London and England, which was published in London in 1594. The play follows the biblical tale of Jonah from the perspective of Nineveh. This is the first production of this play since the theatres closed in 1642. While there is scholarly investment in this play, this production is very queer, very debaucherous, and uses the line between sex and religion as a jumprope.

Q & A with the Artist

We are proud to showcase a variety of different kinds of performing arts at the fringe.

What is your show? What kind of performance is it? What is it about?

Looking Glass is a radical cut of Robert Greene and Thomas Lodge’s A Looking Glass for London and England, which was published in London in 1594. The play follows the biblical tale of Jonah focusing on the people of Nineveh with three distinct, hedonistic plots that weave together by Jonas' arrival in Nineveh. This is the first production since the theatres closed in 1642, and this production is very queer, very debaucherous, and uses the line between sex and religion as a jumprope.

Fringe festivals are a place for art at all levels of creation. Where are you at in your process?

Is this a first draft? A previously produced piece? An experimental show? Or something else?

This production is the North American premiere of this play and the world premiere of this cut of this play. It is being worked on by a phenomenal team of actors, scholars, and theatre makers that care about this play and reintroducing it to the world. By our performances in Omaha, we will have been touring this production across the Midwest for a month.

Why did you submit your show to Omaha Fringe?

We planned a summer tour and love the support of a Fringe community, so joining Omaha Fringe felt like a no-brainer. This show fits the Fringe aesthetic, and we look forward to bringing it to another city.

What are you hoping audiences will experience when they see your performance?

What can audiences expect to take away?

We know that they will be seeing a performance that they have never seen before because this play hasn't been performed in 400 years. Humans have always been silly and messy and a bit debaucherous, and this play highlights those core human elements. There is nothing here that wasn't here in 1592, but this treatment makes it hard to tell that, which is part of the joy of this production.
