Q & A with the Artist
We are proud to showcase a variety of different kinds of performing arts at the fringe.
What is your show? What kind of performance is it? What is it about?
Before statehood, there was a hospital in Dakota Territory where those suffering from mental illness were sent, not so much to be treated but to be warehoused. Some were immigrants, some soldiers, some women whose husbands simply wanted to be rid of them. Some are buried in the hospital's cemetery. Some -- are silent no more.
Fringe festivals are a place for art at all levels of creation. Where are you at in your process?
Is this a first draft? A previously produced piece? An experimental show? Or something else?
Substantially researched and revised, There Is Something I Must Tell You is premiering this summer!
Why did you submit your show to Omaha Fringe?
We like the art scene in Omaha!
What are you hoping audiences will experience when they see your performance?
What can audiences expect to take away?
The history of mental health care is a story of horrors. The stigma surrounding mental illness has gotten better, but fear and shame remain obstacles toward acceptance and care. Hearing these true stories will hopefully decrease stigma and increase discussion.
